Carlisle Rare Breeds Show and Sale,
September 13th, 2008

There were 76 Ryeland entries from 10 vendors, but only about 2/3rds were forward on the day.

The Sale was disappointingly very slow, due to the lack of buyers, primarily due to the Bluetongue restrictions preventing Scottish attendance. Only about half the Ryeland stock sold, the rest failing to meet reserve. This situation was common to all sheep breeds present.

Wool on the Hoof Winner - (L to R) Stephen Hipps, Paul Greenhalgh, Ifan Lloyd. Paul presents Stephen Hipps with the Breed Wool on the Hoof trophy. This is the first time the trophy has been presented, and is in memory of Stephen's late wife Margaret who enjoyed many successes in all classes with Ryelands all around the country. It was very fitting that Margaret's son Paul made the presentation to Stephen.

On the Thursday, the ewe went on to take the Show Interbreed Wool on the Hoof title! Well done to Stephen for breeding and presenting such a fine ewe, and to Ifan for spotting the quality of the fleece.

Royal Highland Show, June 19th - 22nd, 2008

This year's Royal Highland Show Ryeland entry was lucky enough to be largely unaffected by Bluetongue restrictions - and attracted a healthy entry of 47 from an impressive 12 different exhibitors.

Amongst the number were three new exhibitors: Claire Meikle and Kenny Watt from Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire; young brothers Mark and Robbie McConrick from Wigtownshire; and another youngster, Andrew Hunter-Blair from Dalry near Castle Douglas. These new entrants were extremely welcome additions to the "Highland Gathering".

And for Andrew it was a Highland show debut he will never forget. Delighted with a third prize in the shearling ram class, Andrew was absolutely over the moon when his shearling ewe won an extremely strong class, then went on to take the breed title.

His winner was purchased at last year's Carlisle Rare Breeds sale from Richard Wear and was bred by Keepings Dexter.

Reserve champion was the three-shear ram Broomwell Fernando Alonso from Pat Maddock, Wellside, Kingswells, Aberdeen. Bred by Susan Bryden at Lochmaben, he was sired by Ruslin Zebidee out of a Broomwell ewe.

Reserve male champion and best animal bred by exhibitor was from Susan Bryden - the shearling ram Broomwell Johnny Depp. He was sired by Wellside Dennis the Menace and out of a Broomwell ewe.

Reserve female was a ewe lamb from Hilary Mattinson from Nettlesyke , Caldbeck, Cumbria. Her ewe lamb was by Glenbryn Fernando and was being shown for the first time.
